Why? In my experience, it is not uncommon for insiders to sell shares
periodically, especially if they will be receiving more and/or need the money. Bill Gates has sold shares several times since MSFT became public. Andy Grove has sold shares within the last several months as have directors of some of the most successful technology companies on NASDAQ.

Can anyone point to any studies which suggest managements/directors are substantially better investors than the average Joe?

Cheers,
Daniel
