Federal Open Video System Certification is First Step Toward Company Offering Its Advanced Package Of Phone, Video and Internet Services in Major New Market

PRINCETON, N.J., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- RCN Corporation announced today that it has received approval by the Federal Communications Commission to offer video services in San Francisco under the Open Video System (OVS) provision of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. RCN is the nation's largest OVS provider, currently offering video services in several markets from Boston to Washington, D.C., and the first company to receive OVS authority in San Francisco.

''We applaud the FCC for recognizing the benefits of local video, voice and data competition by certifying RCN as a video provider in this extremely attractive market,'' said RCN Chairman and CEO David C. McCourt. ''We look forward to bringing our advanced package of phone, video and Internet services to residents of San Francisco and the surrounding suburbs.''

Federal OVS certification in hand, RCN is currently in the process of negotiating specific OVS terms with local communities.

RCN's San Francisco application included the area within the city limits and additional communities in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
