kash, re:RDRAM

I think Intel just wants to ensure a multitude of suppliers so there will be no shortages in yr 2000 when volume hits.

Now your getting it...

There won't be any shortage because of leadership of one large processor company. Consider these quotes the joint press release posted by Ibexx:

...announced that Intel has begun system testing of functional Direct Rambus(TM) DRAM devices.

Why do you suppose RAMBUS, Toshiba, and LG are talking about activity in Intel labs? You would think these companies would have their own labs :)

Currently, over 50 companies are committed to delivering Direct Rambus technology within their products; including 15 DRAM manufacturers (supplying more than 96% of the worldwide DRAM market); 20 logic IC suppliers, including Intel Corp.; and 25 companies representing the leaders in system-memory implementation products (including memory modules, connectors, clock chips and test systems.)

Quite a claim! Sounds like Intel is achieving its objective. Finally it always helps to check with the OEM's to be sure they are getting what they need:

"The Direct Rambus program represents the primary technological thrust for system memory in 1999", said Jay Bell, vice president and senior fellow at Dell Computer Corporation.

and...

"As the leader in delivering the latest technology to consumers, Compaq supports the system-level design approach taken by Intel and Rambus," said Mike Rubin, director of Presario Desktop Division, Compaq Computer Corporation.

All in all a stellar program so far, and one that couldn't and wouldn't happen without Intel's excellent leadership.
