freeus. according to the press release, hd will test one store in the northeast and possibly open three more in the region beginning in q1fy99. it should be noted too that the "test is being developed and will be run by Bob Wittman, Senior Vice President of Business Development for The Home Depot and former chief operating officer of Orchard Supply Hardware Stores." i'm sure he's got a wealth of knowledge and experience. overall, i don't view it as going too far out on a limb to guinea pig a concept. as usual, location will be key. fwiw, i culled this from the motley fool board. an employee's response to someone else concerned about the test convenience store format. ----- Subject: Re: Convenient Hardware Outlets? Our biggest struggle is providing top of the line customer service. The smaller store will take some of the pressure off. There are consumers that are shopping for just a single item/related items and do not come in to shop because of the headaches involved. There are many customers, DIY's and pros, who don't shop us at all because of the same reasons. With HD's great prices and the different format we will win back these customers plus others. It will be interesting to watch the test stores and see how they do. You have to throw many rocks to break a window now and then.
