Paul, The real archetypes of pre-emptive pricecuts were the oil barons early in the century. They would cut prices in the hope of destroying the competition. Now look at how high the prices were until the K6-2 and 3Dcame on the scene. Once afew were out there and selling out like hotcakes and threatening to attack their pentium II monopoly they acted by first a socket for the celeron (an admission that slot 1 is proprietary fakery) and then deep pricecust to kill AMD.
Do you believe that Intel would keep dropping prices with no AMD the way thay have?
Do you still place lost teeth beneath your pillow?

Study some economics and see to what degree a 5% market share threatens a market dominator.... not at all, unless they are getting better and bigger and need to be throttled while still a child.
