Well there are several problems with xdsl. If you want a good right up on it I think there is one in the new Byte (or last month's don't remember which).

xDSL is currently being hobbled by the same thing that hammered 56K modem sales for 1.5years. Different specs and no one being able to agree. Right now there are no less than 8 different versions and classes of xDSL.

Cable isn't much better off with 3 competeing standards I think (although I believe the cable folks are clsoe to settling on one standard for the bi-dreictional communication, I don't care about the one way downstream modems).
