Divx helps keep down earnings at CC..........................

"Sales from our Circuit City store operations exceeded our expectations throughout the first quarter," said Richard Sharp, Circuit City's chief executive officer, in a prepared statement. "The strength was broad-based, covering personal computer, consumer electronics and major appliance categories," he said.

The company began selling Divx discs and players last week in Richmond and San Francisco, Sharp added. Divx is a DVD "feature" that limits viewing hours of content on the discs.

In a written statement, the company said its CarMax unit and its fledgling Divx effort offset strong sales in PCs and consumer electronics.

According to the filing, $8.1 million of Circuit City's net income went to the Divx effort last quarter.
