Your money is at risk all right. It is at risk because you have invested in the securities market where the value of the security (stock) is determined primarily by what the investment community perceives the value to be at any particular time.

If you did not participate in the venture capital funding, initial public offering (IPO), or a secondary offering by the corporation, then your money did not go to the corporation: it went to some other stockholder.
