Online purchases of goods and services will explode to US$54 billion by 2002 from $4.3 billion in 1997, a joint study by International Data Corp. and RelevantKnowledge said.

The report, released today, also predicted that the number of people reading the from their homes will leap to 102 million by 2002, from about 30 million last year.

"The Web has reached critical mass," said IDC's consumer Internet program manager Jill Frankle. "Whether a company sells directly to consumers or not, it needs to recognize the Web as a bona fide distribution channel."

Other findings in the Web Usage Trends 1998 report included:

Almost a quarter of the surfers who visit commerce sites have household income over $75,000.

While software is the No. 1 item purchased online, commodities like books and clothes are selling increasingly well.

Men still constitute the majority of the online population at 56 percent, but the proportion of women users is growing rapidly.

Teenage girls' online habits more closely resemble those of adults than those of teenage boys.
