Michael, ISDN was not a hit in the U.S., The cost was more than the average person would pay monthly, ie. a Parent paying for their childs access. Here ADSL/VDSL will have popularity now that Inernet access in the U.S. is up 1000% since Jan. 95 and HTML made it look pretty.. HTML was developed in Germany correct?
In Europe (EU), Standards are more easily controlled. How Many Telephone companies are there in Germany ? Ein!
Example only: Europe 12 Counties, about 12 TelCO's
U.S. 12 Telcos 50 States and the telcos are in competition with each other, for the same customers.
For true Internet access with full Multimedia and video coming to the Net very soon, I do not believe ISDN (128KB)or any near term form of ISDN will be able to keep up with the required speed, in the Multimedia/Video needs.
ADSL/DMT (8MB)can handle the noise abatement needed for Twisted Pair Copper lines. CAP can not handle the noise and equal line length.
A major plus for ADSL is the Telco can not afford to send a Tech out to your home to hook up a Modem, then spend hours trying to get a good signal line.... Such as would be the case with CAP..
CAP has it's advantages, but not to the Consummer Mass Market.
The U.S. is full of "Mom & Pop Shops" Internet Access providers. The Telco's and Cable Companies want this Business, & all the new subsribers in the years to come.
ADSL will win for an undetermined amount of time. At least till the Telcos can get FTC Fiber to the curb in place, or Wireless.
The Telcos can only replace 7% a year with FTC. Realistic, is more like 4% because of new customers being added.
The stocks of AMTX,WSTL, & PAIR show there is interest in ADSL, and on going trials are showing great promise.
On this sde of the Pond,
