TRS Technologies Introduces LegalFaxEsq, Providing Enhanced Fax Automation to Mid-sized Law Firms

PC DOCS integration and automated cost recovery are now both easy and affordable

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1998-- TRS Technologies, subsidiary of Omtool Ltd. (NASDAQ:OMTL - news) and recognized innovator in network-based fax automation and cost recovery systems for law firms, today announced the introduction of LegalFaxEsq -- a powerful but affordable version of LegalFax, tailored to firms with 75 or fewer users.

LegalFax is client/server software that combines e-mail and imaging for truly paperless network faxing, making it possible to receive, view, annotate, and send faxes without ever having to print or manually feed a document.

In addition, LegalFax expands the power of the typical fax server by providing real-time integration with the document management systems, contact managers, and time and billing systems used by most law offices. LegalFax is a winner of PC DOCS Summit Award for Outstanding DOCS Open Solution in the legal industry for both 1996 and 1997.

A Real Cost-saving Opportunity for Small and Mid-sized Firms

TRS Technologies created LegalFaxEsq in response to requests from small and mid-sized firms -- those with 11 to 50 attorneys -- for a complete, comprehensive network fax system for under $5,000. ''This segment represents a high growth opportunity for many technology providers,'' says Jeff Gretz, president of TRS Technologies. ''Moreover, the increasing availability of inexpensive client/server based systems gives smaller firms the potential for real productivity gains.''

''Fax automation is one manifestation of this trend, and it's among those with the highest payback,'' continues Gretz. ''For example, we've helped large firms reduce their fax-related costs by 90 percent, and there's no doubt that we can obtain the same level of cost reduction for smaller firms.''

''Complexity and up-front costs were two barriers that smaller firms faced when considering fax automation -- we've removed those barriers with LegalFaxEsq.''

DOCS Integration Also Within Reach

The launch of LegalFaxEsq coincides with the recent introduction by PC DOCS of DOCS Esq, which provides core document management capabilities to mid-sized law firms in an economical, pre-configured package.

Bill Lipner, director of PC DOCS' Legal Business Unit, indicates that ''We're delighted that TRS Technologies, a longtime PC DOCS development partner, is supporting this market. LegalFaxEsq complements DOCS Esq very effectively, and is an excellent opportunity for mid-sized law firms to achieve the efficiencies which, up until now, were available only to larger firms.''

LegalFaxEsq supports Windows 95/98 or WinNT 4.0 workstations, and both Microsoft Exchange and Novell networks. A complete system including the fax server, two fax lines and a 25-user license is available for $3,995 list price. Upgrades to the full version of LegalFax can easily be made in the future with no retraining required.

OMTOOL, LTD.

Omtool CEO, Robert Voelk presented at the conference on Tuesday. Business at the client-server fax company appears to remain strong. There is no change to our 2Q98 EPS estimate is $0.10 on net revenues of $9.1 million. Management indicated that it expects gross margins to improve in 2Q from the historical low of 72% last quarter. Our model assumes 74% gross margin in 2Q98 based on a product mix of 62% software license sales, or $5.6 million. We continue to view Omtool as an unrecognized and undervalued small cap opportunity. We don not see either near-term threats from Microsoft nor a slowdown in the broad use of facsimile.
