Yea, I agree that collectables can
really diversify a portfolio. The
problem is that one can get really
emotionally attached to a collectable
and in theory, not so attached to a
stock or Krugerand. I know someone
who used to collect those packing
crate labes like "trout Apples" and
that kind of stuff. One day, she was
feeling really poor and there was a
collectables show in town featuring
those kind of labels. She went down
and sold her collection and then cried
for weeks afterwards.

I have started collecting classical
guitars myself, but there is a problem.
If you play them (as I love to), you
wear them, and thus reduce their value.
Worse yet, they tend to go bad all by
themselves just due to string tension,
and atmospheric changes. It is a type
of collectable that can waste away...
more tears!
