I think all UNIX vendors will have to make this choice in the next decade. This may be the only glimer of hope that the PowerPC has to be a real Intel competitor. Already, the price performance ratio of custom processors is falling behind both Intel and the PowerPC. MIPS remains viable only because it is widely used in video game boxes and a few other appliances. But, I doubt it will remain that way as Intel continues to pour billions into pushing the performance of its processors.
