From The Wall Street Journal: Aetna/U.S. Healthcare won't pay for Viagra
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Aetna Inc.'s Aetna/U.S. Healthcare managed-care unit said
it won't pay for Viagra, Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster impotence pill, as part of
its regular prescription-drug coverage.
Aetna/U.S. Healthcare, with 13.7 million members across the country, will
offer employers the option of paying extra for Viagra coverage, as it does for
coverage of birth-control pills, an Aetna spokeswoman said.
The decision comes days after Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest
not-for-profit HMO, announced that it won't cover Viagra as a regular pharmacy
benefit. Kaiser's move played no role in Aetna's decision, the Aetna
spokeswoman said.
Aetna/U.S. Healthcare hadn't been covering Viagra pending a final decision.
Last week, the managed-care unit told New York state regulators that it didn't
plan to provide Viagra coverage in its regular pharmacy plan.
Several large insurers have adopted interim policies while they ponder a
final decision on whether to cover Viagra. Those include Prudential HealthCare,
a unit of Prudential Insurance Co. of America, Humana Inc. and PacifiCare
Health Systems Inc., which currently aren't paying for the pill. Cigna
HealthCare, a unit of Cigna Corp., currently is covering as many as six pills a
month for impotence problems with a physical cause and United HealthCare Corp.
is covering as many as eight Viagra pills a month for now.
