Aetna To Allow Coverage for Viagra
JUNE 23, 10:19 EDT

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Aetna U.S. Healthcare, which
does not offer regular coverage for Viagra, is allowing
employers to buy special coverage for the impotence
drug and decide how many pills they want to pay for.

Aetna told New York regulators last week it would not
cover Viagra because having sex is not a medical
necessity. But the insurer said Monday it would extend
the special coverage nationwide.

Aetna, which covers nearly 14 million people, said its
Viagra plan is similar to add-on coverage for birth
control pills, which also cost employers extra.

Aetna said employers will be able to choose the
maximum number of Viagra pills per person that the
insurance will pay for each month. Viagra typically
retails for about $10 a pill.

On Friday, Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest
health maintenance organization, said it would not
cover Viagra.
