Early returns are poor on Win98. I realize this is a long haul thing, and MSFT will claim victory regardless of the outcome, but the fact is sales have not been what MSFT hoped.
I have heard that MSFT was hoping that 98 would sell into the corporate environment quickly, but it hasn't. Companies have not seen a compelling reason to switch to 98 at this point....and may never.
Also, IBM has begun an aggressive push on NC, so there will be additional support for moves away from MSFT - should this become a truly acceptable alternative.
As my CIO pointed out - "I will put some low end users on NC to see how well it works, and to see if it will meet its promise. As we work out the bugs, we will evaluate the viability/need to switch more high end users to it."
I think that is not an all to uncommon thought at this point in time. NC represents a lower cost alternative to satisfy the needs of low-end users.
I don't think he has the kind of money to move ORCL's price (LOL), but his wife sure does (she manages a large portion of GE's pension fund).................
