The $300.00 figure came from Dr. Drees, When I called him last Friday I asked how much are they planing to sell this for, and he said, same as what the hospitals are charging, approximately $300.00/ pint. I'm thinking the difference between the two figures is your figure does not count total hospital charges. Dr. Drees said (as I recall it) there was about a $50.00 charge just to type and cross match blood before it is delivered to the operating room. This is typically done 2 1/2 times as more blood is called for than normally used. So add that on to your figure and you're getting closer. As to the 20 billion figure. That was also one of my questions. Taken from my post of this conversation #1598 Demand for product. Current estimate is that in the world each year, there are 60 million transfusions of blood. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if there was not the shortage of donors, refrigeration problems, typing and cross matching, availability of testing equipment, etc. there could be 120-180 million transfusions per year. I've heard that the average transfusion takes about 2 pints. So if you take 60 million transfusions worldwide X 2 (average pints/transfusion) you have 120 million pints. Multiply that by $300.00 and you have 36 billion dollars. Looks like 20 billion is conservative. Now if you take the World Health Organization figures of 120-180 million transfusions that could be done a year. Let's say an average of 150 million. Times that by 2 (average pints/transfusion)=300 million. Times that by $300.00 and you get 90 billion dollars. So depending on which figures you prefer, actual (60 million transfusions/year) or the potential (120-180 million transfusions/year) it is a large market. That is one of the reasons that I bought SGNC. These are my opinions and figures. Welcome any comments. Hope this helps If you have not read post 1598 I would suggest, as it answered my questions. |
