Sean,
Excellent points! Don't let all the NT- PPRO hype cloud the issues, a
pentium pro w/ NT is still not a workstation. The key difference is floating
point performence. Going forword the real difference will not only be FP, but
that workstations will be 64-bit machines with 64-bit OS's and 64-bit
applications. To look at Ross and compare them to Intel makes no sense at this
point, Intel is king of the castle for a long time to come.
With Ross you have to look at the possibilities and then look at what your
paying for it. It's not survival of the fittest, but survival of the fit. They
don't have to beat Sun so much as carve out their own nich.
As far as Ross's condition is concerned, the company has had no debt
until this quarter. They depleated their cash position as you noted, but
they have a $10 million credit line with first commerce bank of texas,
as well as the $25 million secured through Fujitsu with DKB. That gives them
enough cash to make a go of the systems buisness.
I'll make one more point for disscusion. What is going to happen as Intel reaches
the limits of the x86 architecure and has to move to a RISC based architecure?
You could make the argument that x86 is a couple(or less) generations
from existing, the CPU market then opens up wide for everyone else.
