There's nothing more fundamental than an operator= in a string class and the lack of that demonstrates mind-boggling ignorance of the language. In fact, this was the case with OWL 1.0 wherein the authors apparently had delivered a product without even primal knowledge of class library design. One of the important outputs of the Taligent project was a collection of basic patterns that should be followed in developing C++ classes and applications and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that much of it was crashingly obvious to anyone who had done any sort of volume work in C++. None of those patterns are apparent in OWL and the massive earn-while-you-learn festival resulted in the pile of garbage we have today. You have to separate the compiler issues from the framework and the framework sucks beyond human comprehension. The "integrated debugger" was another farce; nothing more than a warmed over DOS interface that happened to run under Windows. I would point out, however, that OWL has not been a total loss as it now serves as a bad example for future generations.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying Borland has a bad product; I'm saying it's not a good one. The distinction is important because I wouldn't want to ruffle any feathers; rather, I hope to assist those considering an investment with my dispassionate presentation of factual observations.
