Toshiba Chooses Sun's Solaris Software as Strategic Enterprise Operating Environment For Intel Server Market
TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1998--
Target Market Set for Mission Critical Enterprise Applications
Combined With Oracle8(TM) and Oracle(R) Parallel Server
as the Strategic Platform
Toshiba Corporation and Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced an agreement whereby Toshiba will sell and support the Solaris(TM) operating environment as a strategic enterprise solution for cost-effective, scalable, reliable systems on Intel-based servers.
Toshiba entered into this agreement to leverage Sun's highly-scalable, reliable operating system technology to take full advantage of Intel processors. Toshiba will also become a member of Sun's Solaris System Partners Business Council.
"Solaris provides an extremely advanced networking environment for Internet and enterprise applications," said Kaoru Kubo, Group Executive, Info/Communication Platform & Products Group, Toshiba Corporation. "Toshiba is planning to optimize and certify Oracle(R) Parallel Server with Toshiba's clustering software DNCWARE on Solaris software for the Intel platform. With the reliability and availability of Oracle's database clustering technology, combined with the performance and security of Solaris, we can meet the increasing demand of users requiring uninterrupted fast access to all types of data for mission critical applications."
The combination of Toshiba, Sun and Oracle further accelerates the momentum for Solaris as the leading enterprise operating environment for the rapidly growing Intel architecture-based server market. Initially, Toshiba plans to focus on mission critical applications in Japan.
"Oracle welcomes the strategic relationship between Toshiba and Sun," said Ray Wong, vice president, Platform Technologies Division, Oracle. "Oracle's market leading, award-winning Oracle8 database is already available for the Solaris operating environment running on the Intel platform and is a leader on Toshiba's systems. This move provides Toshiba's customers with an easy choice for scalable, reliable, enterprise-class data servers."
"Toshiba's expertise in enterprise computing and Sun's leadership in the enterprise and Internet markets will provide customers with a powerful, reliable, scalable option for 32- and 64-bit enterprise applications," said Rich Green, vice president, Solaris Software. "Toshiba is a welcome addition to our rapidly growing roster of Solaris system partners."
According to International Data Corporation, the Solaris operating environment is a leading UNIX(R) operating environment for combined desktop and server platforms, with 29 percent of total UNIX unit shipments, based on IDC data for calendar-year 1997. As one of the leading UNIX Server operating environments, Solaris operating system unit volume grew 43 percent from 1996 to 1997, to 16% of all UNIX server operating systems sold.
Joint Support for ISV Development
With this agreement, Toshiba leverages Sun's previously announced competency centers for the development of Solaris software for the Intel platform. The worldwide Sun(SM) Developer Connection(SM) program, which was rolled out on May 27 in Japan, will also offer extensive ISV support.
"Corporate IT managers are expecting reliable enterprise solutions that take advantage of the volume and price/performance of the Intel platform," said Nobuyuki Denda, vice president, Sales and Marketing Group, Intel Corporation and president of Intel K.K.. "We are pleased to see Toshiba's commitment to providing enterprise solutions on Solaris software for the Intel architecture, giving corporate users a choice for successful implementation of their IT strategy while protecting their current and future investments."
