Hi, Nick and Jim.
Yes, it's good to be the only 3rd party vendor for the N64. However, they need to make sure their quality of the game matches or exceeds the consumer's expectations. And on an N64, those expectations are going to be high.
Check out n64hq.com. It's the Unofficial Nintendo64 site and readers send in reviews and rank which games they can't wait for and which one (of the 5 that are out) are their 'favorite'. The good news is WG's 3D Hockey gets some pretty good reviews (8s and 9s on a scale of 10). Also, it will be the only sport game out this Xmas for the N64.
The bad news is MKT was panned by most of their readers' reviews (ave. 6 out of 10). (OTOH, what they then say is to go play MK on the Sony Playstation, so Midway does lose out too much, except for, there's more game competition with the other vendor fighting games). Also, Killer Instinct Gold just came out (11/25) on the N64, and its initial reviews are in the high 9s.
Midway will also have out (as developer, Nintendo as publisher) Cruis'n USA on 12/2. Other Midway games coming out in early '97 are: Doom64, NBA Hangtime, RobotronX and War Gods.
I'm sure that they have a number of games coming out on Sega, Sony and for PCs, but you'll have to find someone who uses those products to tell you about them. <g>
Overall, IMO, Midway will do quite well if they can be the first 3rd party with great games in multiple categories for the N64. But they need to be great games. They are too expensive for their customers otherwise.
