>>Does anyone have any ideas about why our math and science scores are among the lowest in the developed countries, and dropping?

It has been well documented - thirty+ years of liberal control of education which has stressed outcome-based education, "new" math and social promotion. It is hardly surprising that conservatives are now getting in to the act.

California recently had an advisory panel made up of liberal academics try to hijack math and science education as part of Clinton's infamous "Goals 2000" scheme to "dumb down" education. Their prescription was to further dilute the curricula and standards. That was rejected after a group of science professors from Cal-Tech criticized their scheme stating that the "2000" recommendations were the precisely the wrong direction for improving education.

After public exposure the "Goals 2000" team report was shelved, but will no doubt resurface when the public averts their attention.
