Well managed cos. tend to split their stock only when they see additional upside. INTC did not split their stock when it hit 100+ last summer and I believe it was in part because they knew the stock could not continue running at that pace. IOM(with questionable mgt) split their stock in the 20's. Because business conditions deteriorated, they now risk having MM's dump their shares because they may fall below the $5 threshold. Absolute numbers, in and of themselves are not meaningless, and they do give us an idea of where management thinks we are headed. Absolute numbers or the falling shy of, can cause MM's to dump their shares, so saying they are meaningless is not looking at reality. I know I will get flamed for saying so, but good mgt will not split their stock unless there is the good potential for additional upside. I believe this was all Paul was trying to say.

BTW, there are many on this thread calling for a bottom of 13 or 1X PSR. At that price, AMAT would have a smaller market cap than Yahoo. And people call me unrealistic?
