Jim,

With all due respect (and that's a lot) while it will be interesting to see how T and TCI get together there is a LOT of legacy at T that is anything but revolutionary, particulary with regard to digital. There's a lot of legacy at TCI as well, not much of it good. They've been reluctant to put cable modems into play even though the opportunity has been staring them in the face for a long time. That's partly due to poor vision, mostly due to low quality cable that needs an overhaul.

Yeah, with T ownership there could be a real turnaround in strategy, but that presupposes a heck of a lot of change at T that I'm not sure even Armstrong has the ability to pull off. It takes a lot more than a press statement to change a culture from staid and very slow and turn it into an entrepreneurial juggernaut.

I still think the best plays are those where the people don't require such a big change in direction. I bought LU, CSCO, and AOL at what I thought were absurdly high prices but decided to suck it up and take the leap. Each has turned out to be an outstanding decision...they didn't even flinch during the recent market turmoil. T however will bite you in the rear very hard if they aren't able to change their culture to pull of this new vision. I find it interesting how LU was begot by T but never had any of the lack of focus and creativity. I think it's due to the fact that LU was sealed off from the rest of T when it was still part of Bell Labs and allowed to pursue a focused strategy.

Good luck...

Phil
