Thanks for your informative post. I agree with almost everything you said except your prediction in Intel. I believe Intel has room to cut prices on Pentium and Pentium Pro and still maintain the 50+ % margin even after K6 is available in volume. Remember Intel is continuously reducing manufacturing cost as silicon processing is refined. Their ability to reduce cost and still maintain the promised margin will especially be true if they start converting to .25u soon.

I personally believe Intel is overpriced but I don't doubt their ability to reduce cost and do relatively well. Besides, I think there is room for both Intel and AMD to thrive. I know that some Intel investors come to AMD thread and have a tendency to bash AMD. I just ignore them and go on to the next message.

You also said that AMD's K6 is "built with the state of the art 5 metal layer IBM process." It's true that it is state of the art. But that's precisely what worries me somewhat. AMD is attempting to do this for the first time. Moreover, with a high transistor count of 8.8 mil they will have to throw away any die that has even one flaw in one transistor even though the small die size may offet this somewhat. Consequently, I think AMD's initial yield rate will be relatively low. While AMD's attempt at a brand new process technology and their high transistor count worry me a bit, I think AMD will pull through although "volume ship date" of 1Q '97 is a bit optimistic IMHO.

Regards.
