doug.
i think you may be referring to their cablespan product which allows voice, video, data over coax as well as a slew of other media including fiber, hybrid fiber/coax, copper, and others. via their website tellabs.com
"The Tellabs CABLESPAN 2300 system--a unique, innovative approach to providing telecommunications services--transforms CATV-only hybrid fiber-coax networks into fully interactive telecommunications networks. Seamlessly integrated with new or existing CATV infrastructures, the CABLESPAN system leverages the operator's investment in the video distribution network. No special hub divider, fiber node or headend equipment is required. The result is fast, early deployment with low start-up costs. Telephony services can be added on a per-subscriber basis, thus allowing investment to keep pace with demand. And, as customer acceptance challenges network capacity, the CABLESPAN network can grow to accommodate increasing customer-take rates."
in a nutshell, coherent essentially provided tlab with additional enhancements for voice and data transmission (e.g., a variety of echo cancellers).
