Competition isn't necessarily a bad thing. For one, it alleviates any lame Justice Dept. attempts to break up a monopoly or regulate an industry.

Secondly, Intel's scale of production is massive compared to AMD or Cyrix. Any competition from those two is niggling at best, but it helps to give the impression of a competitive market. Margins may suffer but that is to be expected in any mature industry. It's the inevitable fate of any business that entrenches it's products in society.
