Basically, the role of the MM is to provide liquidity for trading...if their supply runs out, to get shares they have to short it, if they short and people keep buying, the price will continue to climb rapidly and to add more fuel to the fire eventually the MMs have to cover those shorts with buying.

That is why I urge people to HOLD their shares when we find a low float stock that we like but such is the nature of SI, people get in and get out without realizing full potential...QTNT was a perfect expample of this, MMs were calling the company screaming for shares but lo and behold scared investors started selling and the MMs were saved.
