Bur remember Ciscos layer 3 switches have more protocol support in them given that they are the leading router vendor and have their IGRP and EGIRP running on all of them that any other vendors Layer 3 cannot replace.
But in LAN campuses a third party vendors Layer3 such as the Corebuilder 9000 can flourish if 3Com's sales people can sweet talk better than Ciscos sales and marketing who I have heard can even sell skis to an Arab in the desert.
