Zeev,

Perlite is 70 to 80% SiO2. I tried to market my fine waste to Phelps Dodge for use at their smelter. They told me that Perlite was not pure enough. They want at least 95% SiO2. They purchase quartz from a company near Lordsburg, NM. They pay extra if the quartz contains precious metals. 30 years ago many small mom & pop miners made a living by mining small quartz veins with some gold and silver and selling directly to the smelter for use as flux.

In the new flash furnaces, they grind the concentrate, copper sulfide, very fine and inject with very fine SiO2. They may add other things but they use a lot of quartz.
