HomeLAN is a service provided by the Glasgow Electric Plant Board that attaches Glasgow
residents to a Local Area Network (LAN). This network allows our customers access to local
schools, businesses and the Internet, all at high speeds. The system uses special data channels
to transmit data to and from customer's homes via broadband cable (no phone lines are used),
the same cable used to provide cable television programming.

The Glasgow Electric Plant Board built a 550 MHz mid-split communication system,
completed in 1989. Our bi-directional cable system operates similar to an
interstate highway - having high-speed paths to and from our customers. Most
other cable systems only distribute cable programming to their customers, like a
one-way street.

This is the main reason I don't get the fascination with AOL. What's the big deal? I can get unlimited internet access at speeds 60 times faster than the fastest phone modem all for $19.95. As I'm sure you can tell, no one in our area subscribes to AOL. There's really no need. You can pretty much find anything on the net that you can on AOL, for a much cheaper price. Maybe we're just ahead of the technology curve but if most areas adopt the same sort of internet communication links, I'd say AOL would be in a world of hurt.
