After heating up a section of the bore hole, you temperature sense the temp. decay rate. Any changes in the rate means there is different material on the other side. I'm sure past studies show the patterns for oil and gas. Plus you can vary the starting temp for different rates. The magnetic resonance probably has to do with a change of inductance because of the difference in material behind the bore hole and is detected by a change in resonance frequency. Again, you look for patterns based on past research. How am I doing? sandstuff :)
