It was slightly simplistic, but not essentially misleading.

Despite the details, the point is MIME is a method
of sending binary files through text mail systems.

If memory serves me correctly, the RFC is a formalization
(and generalization) of earlier methods for sending
binary through text mail, I believe originating in the
mostly ASCII DARPA net in the US, though I could be
misremembering the details (or not have had them
right in the first place).
