JGreg, Howdy,

Don't know where Big Dog is, but I'll take a stab at it.

A jackup is a MODU, or mobile offshore drilling unit. It is a self contained barge which can be towed, floating, to a location and "jacked up" to a working height to operate, whether it's by itself (exploration drilling) or next to an existing offshore structure such as a platform. In that case, the drilling package would be "cantilevered" over the production platform so that the work could proceed on the well.

A platform rig is a rig which is designed to be mounted directly on the platform. In essence, it is a land rig with a very small "footprint", so that it's components can efficiently occupy the limited space available on the platform.

Some of these platform rigs are self-erecting, which is to say that they have the craneage as part of their design which allows them to be moved from platform to platform, as needed.

Hope this answers your question.

Regards,

Aggie
