Sony {6758} has developed and will launch its " DVD -ROM Discman PBD-D50" portable disc player. It can play music CDs, be used as a DVD -ROM/CD-ROM drive when connected to notebook PCs, and can be attached to TVs for playing DVD video software. The discman is 33.5mm thick and weighs only 570g. Sony will simultaneously launch its PBDKit-PC1W, which allows users to connect their discman to Windows95-compatible PCs. The PBD-D50 Discman is priced at 90,000 yen, while the PBDKit-PC1W costs 14,000 yen.

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Corp. (SNE or 6758) has developed the first portable DVD -ROM player able to both read DVD -ROM data and play DVD videos, the Nikkei Industrial Daily said in its Thursday edition.

The PBD-D50 player can also play video and music compact discs. It can be linked to laptop computers running Windows 95.

The unit is compact, measuring approximately 3.4 x 15 x 18cm, and weighs just 570 grams.

The player is due out July 10 and will have a price tag of 90,000 yen (Y).
