Close, your right on the open hole. However a cased hole is where casing, ie, steel or some other form of metal pipe lines the hole from the surface to somewhere below the lowest formation you believe to be productive. This casing is cemented in place. All freshwater zones are sealed off by cement to prevent contamination. Most freshwater zones are relatively close to the surface. Regards, Bob
