Mike and all,
I have heard some turkey talk when I listened to Lam Res conf call last night (held on 24th.) In my opinion, Jim Bagley comes out with flying colors in calling the spade a spade. Some excerpts:
- They expect the semicon capital expenditure to be down about 30% from last year. 70% for Korea, 12% for NA, 20% for Europe, 40% japan.
- An analyst wanted to know if Lam's problems are related to losing marketshare (perhaps he wanted to upgrade AMAT -g-). the answer was possibly not.
- With the exception of Taiwan, no truth to the reports of curtailing production at DRAM fabs. In general, the fabs are running at full capacity (Taiwan 55-70%). Nobody wants to be "altruistic" towards the industry by forefieting some revenues. They are all in desperate need of cash.
- TXN/MU deal is not necessarily good for them. Especially they have tough time figuring out TXN/MU's near term need for capital equipment.
Most interesting of all - some tough talk about demand for chips and PC's
- Jim has tough time believing the reports that give rosy prospects to PC demand. He thinks it does not reflect in the chip demand. He fell short of saying that he doesn't believe in the rebound theory for PC demand.
- It is possible all this dramatic reduction in capital spending will eventually cause the demand to catchup with the demand. But, he doesn't see that happening in the next few quarters.

A paraphrased quote "I have been in this business for however many years. I have NEVER seen such a dramatic slowdown for the equipment market and the chip market." That sums it all.

Perhaps you should listen to the call yourself: 1-800-642-1687, conf code 234217
