Good Point. Reliability and integrity of cable systems running digital is one of the biggest factors SFA and GI have focused on in upgrading cable plants. I now understand your point. Right now, the RBOC's look like the odd man out. Partnering with the RBOC's would bring marketing clout, a return path for high speed internet access via twisted pair or other and telephone as usual. I missed what you were saying. Time Warner and some others have got their plant to over 70 percent upgrade by year end. They do not need AT&T capital.

Many others and some mid size to small MSO will need to partner up with deep pocketed companies to help their build out. I believe this deal is negative for DBS only because TCI was moving at a snails pace in upgrading channel capacity and interactive services (only 7% of their plant is upgraded). That gives DISH and DTV more time to steal their subs. AT&T will accelerate the spending and buildout. They are talking about a rebuild in two years vs TCI's 3 to 5. That was my point. Since not all cable companies will sell out for capital, but the RBOC will need to find a way to play in the digital game, an alliance with an ECHO would make some sense. What other choices do they have? Time will tell in two or three years wether a person will be inclined to recieve their digital services via a cable Pipe or a combo wire/dish delivery. I believe that bandwidth will be a big issue, but who knows what new compression technologies will come up.
