Object Design predicts object database boom across Europe
JUN 26, 1998, M2 Communications - Object Design Inc, the leading object database company, has opened a new subsidiary in The Netherlands, a new distributor operation in Switzerland and expanded its offices in the UK, France and Germany. This European expansion, a result of the demand for its pure object and pure Java technology, brings the number of Object Design offices and distributors in Europe to seven.
This expansion in Europe follows a growth in European license revenues during 1997 of 62 per cent resulting in total revenues of $11.2 million. For the company, software license revenues increased by 40 per cent to $9.2 million for the three months ended March 31, 1998. The total number of staff now employed by the company across Europe is 70.
David Wells, senior analyst, Ovum, said, "Object database technology offers advantages in two increasingly important contexts - managing document and multimedia data and applications for lightweight clients such as PDAs. Object Design is in a good position to capitalise on these opportunities, especially as it is focusing its marketing effort where its technology offers significant advantages, rather than trying to beat the relational database vendors on their own turf."
Jim Beagle, vice president-Europe Object Design, said: "The expansion of Object Design across Europe is evidence of object database growth in our core markets for component-based computing as well as the emerging markets of publishing, new media and embedded systems. As the leading pure object database company in Europe, we are increasingly winning competitive bids against the hybrid database players, all of which are yet to deliver a pure Java database."
He continued, "The recent entrance of Computer Associates into the pure object database industry is very positive for the overall market and can only work to further fuel the demand for the technology."
Object Design France has re-located to La Defense, the main business district on the outskirts of Paris, and Object Design in the UK to Theale in Reading.
Object Design customers in Europe now include: Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and Siemens.
