'V-Men' Go On Trail Of Illegal Viagra
Friday June 26, 12:39 PM

A squad of "V-men" has been set up to enforce the prohibition on Viagra, the new wonder-drug for impotence.

The Special Enquiry Unit established within the enforcement division of the Medicines Control Agency will search for anyone illegally selling Viagra, which is not licensed in the UK.

Like the FBI "G-men" who upheld prohibition in the United States in the 1930s, the MCA agents will have the power to seize contraband Viagra and have offenders prosecuted.

The unit was set up to crack down on the black market in Viagra before it grows too big - there have already been more than a dozen reports of illegal attempts to sell Viagra in Britain.

Publicity surrounding the drug, which is said to turn men of 60 into sexual athletes, has led to massive demand worldwide, with people willing to pay fantastic prices for illicit supplies.

Doctors have repeatedly warned that Viagra is not a sex-aid but a medicine which can be dangerous if taken without proper precautions. Several deaths have already been reported in the United States.

Viagra is not yet licensed in the UK or anywhere else in the European Union.

It can only be sold or supplied on a "named patient" basis to fulfil the needs of an individual patient. A doctor prescribing a drug in these circumstances has to take personal responsibility for the
outcome.

Under the 1969 Medicines Act, selling Viagra through small ads or Internet web sites is a criminal offence punishable by a maximum two year prison sentence or an unlimited fine.

A confidential hotline has been set up for anyone wanting to tip-off the Enquiry Unit about illegal Viagra sales. The number is 0171 273 0617.
