I must add that my view planning is open-ended. I never know WHAT I may want to do next, so I tend to look for the most upgrade flexibility. For limited purposes (if you're SURE of them), another approach might make sense. Even there, though, I'd worry as to what the future of that limited purpose was in tomorrow's new improved state of software bloat.

My own computer needs vary significantly over time. I used to like to play with graphic applications (home use). Web Surfing and this thread now take up most of my spare time.

For my own current home use RAM modem speed and screen real estate seem to be limiting factors. I open a lot of windows while indexing the thread. Win 98 may open some multimedia doors which may shift some usage to the CPU.

My work machines also fit into the mix. I need one machine that fits both sets of circumstances...a compromise, sort of a one size fits all machine. For me this means lots of RAM, a fast processor or two and multiple operating systems in a machine that is always there for me when I need it. I work and play on the same machine (at home of course)
