Lance,

There are two parts to the Rambus technology:
1) RAC
2) RDRAM

If you want to see an architecture drawing, look at Figure 5 of rambus.com

The RAC (Rambus ASIC Cell) is integrated into the chip set (sometimes called the core logic) to facilitate data transfers to or from the RDRAM and the microprocessor. You can't talk to a RDRAM unless somewhere there's a RAC. The two primary vendors of chip sets are Intel and VIA. Intel has already clearly described how they will incorporate a RAC into their next chip set called Casino. Reference:

techweb.com

To my knowledge, VIA via.com.tw has not announced their intentions regarding Rambus. However VIA's goal "is to become the recognized alternative to Intel for PC-centric core logic ICs." VIA chip sets are quite common on AMD motherboards. For instance, look at amd.com.

So . . . the bottom line is that Rambus gets a royalty for the RAC in the chip set from Intel (and most likely VIA) AND for the RDRAM interface in the RDRAM from the DRAM guys.

Regards,

Mark
