Bill, there is a large contingent of people who referred to that as the Contract ON America!!! While it is true that the populace periodically gets tired of the party in power and votes more of the other one in for a little variety, the majority of Americans do not support the very harsh, cold, narrow and moralistic values of the far right. And I see that the Republicans are now taking on the HMO's and trying to get better health coverage for Americans. Gee, isn't that what Hillary was trying to do a few years ago? Politicians are whores, basically, and will do whatever is necessary to get votes, until the special interests who control them step in and remind them who controls the purse strings. What was so refreshing about Perot is that he seemed somewhat immune to that whole process. Nutty as a fruitcake, but very entertaining!!
Do you really believe the liberal press is that powerful? Newtie shot himself in the foot several times, as I recall. And that bit about him talking about a divorce with his wife in her hospital room, just coming out of anaesthesia after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, was not very flattering. Or the fact that he didn't pay child support, and his wife's church had to take up a collection to help his family. Unfortunately, the conservative Republicans are not any better than any other politicians, as a group. They are just more moralistic, and hypocritical. After awhile the public figures that out. |
