You said "forget gold as a medium of exchange." I can certainly understand why this is a popular idea. My interest in gold and hard assets comes from my belief that our present system is out of control, to wit:

I heard somewhere that >8,000 Wall streeters received bonuses of 1 million dollars or more in l997. My sister, who is nearing retirement as a school teacher, has not made 1 million dollars in constant dollars in her entire 30 year career. So 30 years of teaching is not worth just the bonuses of the people who are in the right spot.

Maybe this has nothing to do with the POG and is just more "small arms fire," but I have zero confidence in dollars. What is the production cost of a dollar anyway?
