Matsushita Battery To Mass-Produce Super-Thin Cells For Laptops

June 26, 1998

Nikkei English News via NewsEdge Corporation : OSAKA (Nikkei)--Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. will begin commercial production of a super-thin lithium ion battery for notebook personal computers in July, company sources said. Output will initially be 1 million units per month, with manufacturers of ultra-thin laptops in both Japan and Taiwan expected to buy most of the cells.

The new battery is 34mm wide, 50mm deep and 10mm thick, and weighs 42 grams. With its capacity of 1,400 mA/hour, the battery has about 20% better energy density the company's lithium ion battery for cellular phones.

Many notebook PCs currently run on several cylindrical batteries 17-18mm thick. Ultra-thin notebooks now hitting the market require much more compact cells.
