Worswick,

One of my favorite stories told by one of my old
China hands (which I suspect is not the same as
yours) is also told circa 1910.

An Englishman stationed in China felt the same way
as yours did.

>> He hated China. He hated the Chinese. He
>> regarded the Chinese as "heathens, irredemibly
>> corrupt and lacking any vestige of humor"

One day he remarked to one of his Chinese
colleagues "You people are barbarians. All of
you openly clear your throats and spit into
vessels which are located in each room. It is
truly disgusting."

His Chinese colleague replied. "We are the
barbarians? When you have to clear your nose or
throat, you take a cloth from your pocket, hack,
blow and wheeze into it. Then you carefully wrap
it up and put it back into your pocket. Surely,
you are the barbarians!"

This cultural clash continues until we....that's
right, you and I, take the time to understand
each different culture we have contact with. Only
then can we truly understand. DS

PS: I hope this note reaches you before lunch
