Charles,

For the life of me, I can't see how you interpreted my post to mean that I am anti-democratic. I believe strongly in the constitution, but I recognize that none of its amendments are absolute, that all of them are subject to interpretation, and that the authority to interpret them rests finally in the Supreme Court. As for distrusting the government, I agree that the highest obligation of any citizen is to remain skeptical toward those in power. I also know from experience in the anti-war movement of the sixties that some of the people who oppose the government deserve distrust as well. God help us if some of them ever got real power -- and I mean those on both extremes of the political spectrum.

I never suggested that a person doesn't have a right to defend himself or his family. I just don't want him shooting it out with those he thinks are trying to harm him in my front yard.

As for being sheltered from real life, well, I've seen a bit of it. If I felt unsafe, I would consider having a weapon. However, my perception is that many people who do feel unsafe enough to keep a gun (and do so for that reason alone) are reacting more to inner fears than real probabilities. And I believe the statistics that suggest that it is more likely that the gun you purchase to protect yourself against criminals will more likely be used against you or your family (most likely, it won't be used at all).

As for not helping me when things get ugly, that's ok. I'm pretty satisfied with the police protection in Los Angeles and Southern California as a whole. I'll turn to them.
