You're right about the decreasing throughput per subscriber as the number of subs goes up, but I suspect in the case of a phone company partnership the subs that are close to a central office would have the data service completely serviced by xdsl. The subs for whom the xdsl service is marginal would get data over satellite, with the return path over xdsl or standard telephone.

Still trying to decide whether or not to pick up more shares now, or wait until the problems with Echostar IV are better characterized. I think DISH's attractiveness to partners is greatly enhanced by having fully operable satellites (obviously), so that the margin of safety in case of future problems (transponder failure, etc) is high.
