Gregaory,
Re: "Is LU flexible and quick enough to make use of its standing in the industry to make the above happen?"
My first inclination, ordinarily, would be to say no. But I've had some dealings with the breed of individuals who make up the LU advanced IP services group, and I was pleasantly surprised with their alertness and standing with respect to standards issues and time to turn around product information. Of course, there is a lot of cross breeding going on right now, and some of the folks I spoke with sounded more like typical CSCO engineers and marketing types than traditional bellheads.
One of the things that is on LU's side now is that they have a new overlay of talent that is relatively immune to the baggage carrying pains of the past. I should also add that the other players have been very hard at work recruiting telco types, as well.
Conversely, some of the folks at LU I've spoken to can't talk the language of conventional telephone, which was a little embarrassing for both me and them. But if there is any merit to the saying "out with the old, and in with the new," then theirs will only be a short term liability.
