Ari, there are several possible reasons to drill this deep. In Australia kimberlites etc are very deeply weathered, so deep samples are required to get a true picture of the host rock. Secondly, the diamond content in diatremes is usually very variable (it also varies quite a bit in South African type pipes) and the top layers are often barren, or low grade. Usually there is only one phase of the diatreme or pipe that will carry diamonds, and this may not outcrop (or even come close to the surface).
